The New Blueprint's community activation series entitled 'The New Blueprint Parlor' is a curated discussion brainstorming innovative solutions to old problems with a focus on new approaches. This time we challenged the racist oridgins of the card game and term 'Spades', and discussed the significance of playing card games to play and not to win as a way of celebrating African American community and culture. We also explored the significance of black bartenders and enjoyed a batch of classic Quoit Punch, a historically rich cocktail.

Spades was derived from the game 'Bid Whist', so to honor the lesser known game my team designed a 54 playing card deck entitled 'Fades to the Spades' that crosses out every spade in the deck, and includes fully customized royal cards that depict melanated monarchs.

Following our curated discussion, attendees were guided on how to play, followed by shadowed sessions and breakout games though the evening.
